Gatehouse’s Shariah Supervisory Board (SSB) comprises of individual Shariah experts who are independent from the bank, but are active in overseeing its operations. The SSB reviews transaction documentation and other contractual obligations entered into by Gatehouse including standard terms of employment and insurance arrangements.

The SSB is formally appointed by the Board of Directors, pursuant to the delegated authority of, and reporting directly to, the Bank’s shareholders. The SSB consists of three leading Islamic experts as follows:

Sheikh Nizam Yaqouby

Sheikh Nizam Mohammed Yaquby is an internationally acclaimed Shariah scholar in the Islamic banking and finance industry and joined as Chairman of the Shariah Supervisory Board in March 2015. He has a background in both traditional Islamic sciences with senior scholars from different parts of the Muslim world and also a Master’s degree in Economics from McGill University in Canada.

Sheikh Nizam has taught Islamic subjects in Bahrain and lectured all over the world. He is a member of many International Boards including the Sharia Council of AAOIFI, Dow Jones Islamic Index, Central Bank of Bahrain Shariah Committee and IIFM Shariah Council. Sheikh Nizam has edited several Arabic manuscripts and authored on various subjects in both Arabic and English.


Dr Abdul Aziz Khalifa Al Qassar

Dr Al-Qassar holds a PhD in Islamic Fiqh from Al-Azhar University, and is assistant professor at Shariah College, Kuwait University, where he has also acted as Deputy Dean for Academic Affairs since 2002. He is a member of the Shariah supervisory boards of several Islamic financial institutions, including The Securities House, and has published several academic works. Professor Al-Qassar published in a number of journals on topics relating to Islamic Finance and Islamic law. He sits in the Shariah boards of a number of equity funds in the GCC. Supervised and discussed a number of Masters’ theses at the Faculty of Advanced Studies, Kuwait University.


Sheikh Essam Khalaf Al-Enezi

Sheikh Esam Khalaf Al-Enezi is a Shariah advisor for several local and regional Islamic financial Institutions, and a member of the Shariah Supervisory Board at many Islamic banks throughout the GCC countries. He is also a member of the Shariah Council and the Standards Committee at AAOIFI. Shaikh Al-Enezi holds a PhD from the University of Jordan majoring in Jurisprudence. He is currently a lecturer at the Shariah College at Kuwait University.
